How to design coffee packaging that benefits your beans, and your brand.

So, your customer just settled in for their necessary morning cuppa. Just as they take that first sip, they realise the coffee tastes stale! That is definitely not going to win any repeat customers.

When it comes to coffee, it’s all about freshness. The fresher the beans, the better your morning cuppa will taste. No one likes a stale cup which is why it is important not to underestimate the importance (and impact) coffee packaging plays when it comes to keeping your beans tasting their best.

Traditional food packaging comes in many shapes and sizes that are designed to keep toxins out, help the product maintain its shape and texture, and attract consumers through great packaging design. Coffee packaging is no different with stand up pouches and side gusset bags being the most popular choices for packaging roast coffee. Coffee packaging should be designed to be functional by protecting the contents inside while also getting your product noticed for its great looks, because no one likes ugly packaging are we right?!?

When choosing coffee packaging for your brand, make sure you choose the materials and style that will keep your product safe during shipping and storage. Your packaging design should also be able to withstand consumer use which includes staying as fresh as possible while it is safely stored in the pantry to be reused. Our stand up pouches and side gusset bags are specially designed to maintain freshness.

Add a one-way valve to increase retail shelf life; not bigger than a pin hole in your packaging, and you are onto a winner. Just this small difference can make a big difference to the freshness of your product.

The exterior of your product packaging design provides an opportunity for you to let your brand really shine. Here it is important to include key information about your company such as where the coffee beans were harvested. For example, smaller, fair-trade coffee plantations typically include information about the farmers who work to harvest the beans. This small piece of information adds a big impact as it shows consumers where your values lie as a company.

Another way to showcase your values is by listing any eco-friendly initiatives that your company supports. Any certifications such as “organic” or “fair trade” should be clearly displayed so they are identifiable to the eco-conscious consumer.

Lastly, whatever flavour your beans are… show your consumers how they can enjoy your blend. What makes it different? What is its unique flavour profile? There are numerous ways you can showcase this information through design. Let your imagination be your guide!

In retail, first impressions matter. Your brand has a higher chance of getting chosen from the shelf if it looks more visually appealing than a competitor’s. The more you can draw consumers in by showcasing your brand story, the more you increase the likelihood that consumers will recognise and purchase your product again in the future.
